Warsaw Metro Map on As the years past, he worked with some of the leading artists in the field including playing tenor sax with Herb Pomeroy’s orchestra, piano with Maynard 49 Byard Ferguson’s big band, and a particularly rich association with Charles Mingus from the 1960s until the early 1970s. Signing a recording contract with Prestige in 1961, Byard released a string of quality albums (Out Front!, 1961; Freedom Together!, 1966; Sunshine of My Soul, 1967; Jaki Byard with Strings, 1968) highlighting his musical eclecticism. While with Prestige, he won the Down Beat Jazz Poll for most promising musician of 1966. His 21 piece group, the Apollo Stompers, was voted the Best House Band in the Big Apple in 1979 while playing Ali’s Apple in downtown Manhattan. Continuing to perform with distinction in various groups throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Jaki Byard also demonstrated an unrivalled commitment to jazz education. A faculty member at Boston’s prestigious New England Conservatory of Music from the early 1970s to the 1980s, the musician (in addition to an unbroken allegiance to private instruction) also taught at institutions including the Hartt School of Music, the Alma Lewis School of Fine Arts (Boston), the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music (Flushing), the Manhattan School of Music, and Harvard.
