Flying the flag

THE FOLLOWING letter and comments are extracts from one of the debates on the forum pages of our Internet site, www.ybw.com

Can someone tell me if we are the only country to use three different versions of the same flag to signal our nationality? And why we should bother? -Wully

The UK is not alone; many countries have ensigns which differ from their national flag. India, for example, uses a white ensign with the national flag in the hoist on its Naval ships, Japan has a different Naval and merchant ship ensign, and if you want to see yacht flag etiquette taken really seriously, try the USA!

I was once severely rebuked by a Belgian police launch for tacking briefly into Belgian waters in the Scheldt with my Dutch courtesy flag still up, so it matters a lotto some people!
