THE NEWS that the Bowman Group had called in the receivers followed shortly after an announcement that Westerly Yachts, part of the Group, had been acquired by Dutch builder Trintella Shipyard BV.
The announcement about Bowman, builders of the well known range of blue chip, longdistance cruisers, surprised both owners and the industry.
The first Bowmans, the 26 and 36, were built in the 1960s before the company moved into bigger boats. After a merger with Rival, the company became Rival Bowman and continued building the Rival range for a while before commissioning the first of the ‘new’ Chuck Paine-designed Bowmans, the 40. The 48 followed, then the 45 and most recently the 42, an updated version of the 40.
The company had also taken on the Starlight range after the collapse of Sadler, and acquired Westerly later. It is hoped that a buyer will be found for the range.
Both Westerly and GRP Trintella production will remain in the UK, with non-GRP Trintella construction staying in Holland.
In a separate move Nautor, builders of the renowned Swan range, was purchased from the paper manufacturing parent company by a private consortium, some of them Swan owners.
