FAUNA: I The animals of Australia are known the world over Lustralia The kangaroo, koala, wallaby, platypus, anteater, and giant turtles. Among birds, count the fascinating kookaburra, which allegedly laughs instead of sings; the huge emu; the lyre-bird, which imitates its feathered colleagues; cockatoos and parrots; bower birds and love birds. All of these animals and birds won’t be found around or in the cities, but are native to the country and may be seen in Sydney’s Zoological Park or Melbourne’s Zoological Gardens or at nearby fauna reserves such as the National Park.

FLORA I: New South Wales is famous for its vegetation. Distinctive to the section is the waratah, a rosette of red; the flannel flower, which has green-tipped white petals; the red Christmas bush. These and many others may be seen at Botanic Gardens. In Melbourne, a very fine selection of Australian flora is usually on display in the Botanic Gardens.

FOOD : Australians are great meat eaters. Beef and lamb are very popular. There is also a plentiful supply of fish, together with most types of international foods. There is no shortage of food in this area. Prices in restaurants are quite reasonable by American standards. Pasteurized milk is available and is safe to drink.

GAMBLING : No casinos, but there is frequent horse racing and dog racing at various courses with pari-mutuel (known as totali-sators) and legal blogmakers.

LANGUAGE : English.

LAUNDRY AND DRY CLEANING : Laundry facilities compare favorably with the United States in speed, quality and price. Laundry and dry-cleaning facilities are also available in the better-class hotels.

LIQUOR: Beer is inexpensive and the most popular drink. Good but stronger than ours. Whiskies, imported liqueurs, popular American cocktails are all readily available at prices about the same as at home, but no bourbon or rye available. Try Australian wines, especially still dinner wines. Hotel bars are open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Drinks are available in restaurants and dining rooms until 10:00 p.m. in Melbourne. In Sydney, hours are 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., close from 6: 30-7:30.

MEDICAL FACILITIES : Medical facilities are comparable to those in the United States. Doctors and dentists are excellent.
