The lunigiana (Land of the Moon) region takes its name from the port of Luni -so called because of the moonlike luminescence of the marble shipped from here in Roman times. From the l6th century onwards, the Dukes of Malaspina built castles here and fortified villages against banditry. Malaspina castles can be seen at Massa, Fosdinovo. Aulla, Fivizzano and Verrucola. At Pontremoli, the 14th-century Castello del Piagnaro houses the Museo delle Statue-Stele Lunigianesi. which shows prehistoric carved stone figures from the region.
