ARTS : In Sydney, the National Art Gallery contains a good collection of Australian and foreign paintings and statuary, Australian Museum, College Street and Hyde Park, specializes in aboriginal life and natural history. Macquarie Galleries has exhibitions by leading Australian artists.

In Melbourne, the National Museum on Swanston Street, carries a very fine selection of native crafts, including the stuffed and mounted PharLap, the wonder horse. The National Art Gallery, Swanston Street, contains some of the finest works of art in the Southern Hemisphere. A noteworthy attraction in addition to the old masters is a collection of paintings by Australian artists.

BALLET : Touring American and European companies appear from time to time. There is a national company too, which tours the various states.

BANKS : There are a number of trading banks, all of which have branches throughout Australia. Traveler’s checks can be cashed at any branch. Representatives of the Bank of New South Wales and the Commonwealth Bank meet every incoming aircraft in order to convert overseas travelers’ funds and cash traveler’s checks, regardless of the arrival time of the aircraft. Other banks are Australian and New Zealand Bank; Commercial Bank of Australia; Commercial Banking Co. of Sydney; English, Scottish and Australian Bank, and the National Bank of Australia. Thos. Cook & Son is at 350 George Street in Sydney, 267 Collins Street in Melbourne. American Express is in David Jones’ Castlereagh Street store, Sydney.

CIGARETTES AND TOBACCO: Philip Morris are made in Australia, but if you prefer others bring them with you and pay duty (see customs regulations). Most Australian cigarettes are the English type; pipe tobacco is very good.
