More than three decades old and going strong, the Stormy Weather Arts Festival gathers a diverse array of talents to Cannon Beach each November for a weekend of performances, exhibits, and special activities on the beautiful Oregon coast. Cannon Beach fosters a vibrant arts community and is home to a dozen or so galleries and many skilled artists.

Specifics vary somewhat year to year, but popular Stormy Weather Arts Festival events begin with a Friday evening Stormy Weather Arts Benefit Cocktail and Dessert Party featuring skilled jewelry artists and their bedazzling works. The party includes a silent auction and raffle with proceeds benefitting children’s art programs in Cannon Beach, including the Coaster Theatre’s Coaster Kidz Theatre Camp, the Cannon Beach Arts

Association children’s Summer Art Camp, and the Sea Ranch Children’s Summer Music Camp.

The Saturday highlights include a concert featuring well-known or up-and-coming musicians at the 200-seat Coaster Theatre Playhouse. This cozy, intimate venue offers outstanding acoustics in an up-close-and-personal setting.

Another Saturday event that draws a full house is a lively fashion show called Dancing in the Rain, which features apparel and accessories from local and nationally recognized designers. On Sunday, at the Cannon Beach Community Hall, festival attendees can try local beers and a barbecue lunch to the accompaniment of live blues music.

Throughout the festival, Cannon Beach’s galleries host artist receptions and other events, alongside many intriguing exhibits. The talent pool at Stormy Weather includes not only the visual arts (in many different mediums), but also literary and performing arts. Musicians play at a number of small venues throughout Cannon Beach, which is one of the coast’s most pedestrian-friendly towns. No matter the weather, simply park at one of the public lots and enjoy the entire festival on foot, checking out not only the galleries and events but the town’s hidden treasures in the form of excellent restaurants, wineries and breweries (and even a distillery), and shops of all descriptions.

Even in November—when the weather can indeed be stormy—Cannon Beach is a popular tourist destination, so it pays to make lodging reservations well in advance of the festival.
