GEOLOGY. The Balearic Islands form the only group situated in West Mediterranean. They are not at all of volcanic origin as commonly stated. They are formed in great part of calcareous and sandy rocks, clay and marl. It is obvious that these materials were formed in the bottom of disappeared sea or in continental lagoons, as in the case of Majorcan lignites.
written in Castellan. Of these only Tomas Aguilo (1812-1883), cultivated with success the revived poetry which, little by little was incorporated with the Catalan under the aspect of literature. The Majorcan poet, folklorist and philologist Mariano Aguilo was principally responsible for the restoration of the language, he published the Romance feudal and the first cla-sical Diccionari Catala. It was notable, the poetical contributions of Josep Lhris Pons i Gallarza (1823-1894), Jeroni Rossello (1827-19092), Guillem Forteza (1838-1898), Tomas Forteza (1838-1898) who besides the cultivation of poetry published the first Scientific Gramatica Catalana and Ramon Pico Campanar (1843-1906) author of notable romances of knighthood. Pere d’Alcan-tara Penya (1823-1906) and Bartomeu Ferra (1843-1924) were popular play writers of the customs and habits of the time. Gabriel Maura brother of the politician Antonio Maura was a remarkable prosaist, his work Aigoforts describes with intense colour the life of Majorca, in the second half of the XIX century.
The majorcan poetry arrived at its fullness with the contribution of the topmost authors: Mossen Miguel Costa i Llobe-ra (1854-1922) and Joan Alcover (1854-1926). The former, with a deep clasical culture not only did he produce poems of great value but he gave new forms to the Catalan language. Joan Alcover, besides being an important author and poet, published
his Elegies, worthy to figure in the universal anthology. To these two poets followed Miguel dels Sants Oliver (1864-1920) who besides being a poet was a great publisher and historian; Maria Antonia Salva (1870-1958) who enriched the literature by her personal notes of great humanist and prose writer; Miguel Ferra (1855-1947) with his fine aristocratic style, purified and raised Majorcan poetry. Among other poets, must be mentioned; Mateu Obrador (1853-1909); Josep Maria Tous Maro-to (1870-1949); Gabriel Alomar (1873-1941); Joan Ramis d’Aire-flor (1882-1956) and Bartomeu Forteza (1894-1957). As a prose writer, Mossen Antoni M.a Alcover (1862-1932) who collected the Rondalles Mallorquines (folktales) and initiated the great work, the Diccionari Catala-Valencia-Balear which was completed in 1962. And the prose writer Mossen Salvador Galmes, eminent follower of Ramon Llull (1878-1951).
Besides the mentioned writers, a great number of reknown, literary men in the fields of poetry, novels and the Majorcan theatre cultivate the verse in its most divers tendencies and forms. The first innovator of poetry was Bartomeu Rossello Porcel (1913-1937). (MIGUEL FORTEZA).
