Having the cavernous converted Bankside Power Station to yourself is a real luxury, and that’s pretty
much what you get on Friday and Saturday evenings, when Tate Modern is open until 10pm. The decorative arts museum, the V&A, is open until 10pm on Wednesdays, and on the last Friday of every month a special late event is staged: everything from high fashion to turntablists can be seen among the ancient art. It’s truly atmospheric.
Enjoy Late Night London At London Transport Museum’s Friday Late … Steel wire is dangerous: a taut wire that snaps under load can cut a man in half. Thick wires are hung over the bow and stern of a ship when in port. These are known as fire wires and are hung there in case a tug needs to tow a burning ship away from the dock. Fire wires need to have large eyes spliced in either end: one end is hung down to water level and the other is placed over a pair of mooring bits on the deck. The 3-foot-long eye has to be as strong as possible and we always used a lock splice, which is virtually unbreakable.
