Morocco Metro Map on Home to 90 percent of Chicago’s blacks, Bronzeville was a musical Colwell 62 melting pot for gospel, electric blues, and urban dance music. Young Sam heard and absorbed it all. By the age of four, Sam and his siblings were billed as the Singing Children and performed gospel tunes before their father’s sermons and in other area churches. Sam sang alone for pocket change on street corners. Underaged, he sneaked into bars where electric blues held sway singing stool-to-stool for handouts. While a sophomore in high school, Sam joined the Teenage Highway QCs, a gospel group popular on the area’s church quartet circuit.
