Map of Yass on Dallas police linked the fatal attack to at least five robberies spread over two days scattered from North Dallas to Oak Cliff. During the increasingly violent spree, the robbers had stolen two cars, threatened the kidnap of a child, shot the two actors, and struck another man on the head with a gun butt. Days after the killing, police had four teenagers, the oldest 17- year-old Freddie Leon Rudd, in custody with Rudd and two of the juvenile gang identifying a 14-year-old in the group as the triggerman. As debate raged over the issue of proceeding against the juveniles as adults on a charge of capital murder, Smith 290 over one hundred friends of the murdered actor pressed Dallas authorities to vigorously prosecute the case to the full extent of the law. Three of gang (Rudd, Corey Drake, 16, and Deprece Pratt, 17) were certified as adults, but the 14 year old identified by the others as the shooter was found to be mentally retarded and was committed in early 1993 to a Texas mental health and mental retardation facility. Pratt was convicted of capital murder in October 1993 and given a mandatory life sentence. He will be ineligible for parole until he is at least 52. Map of Yass 2016.
