In 1620 Champlain improved the fortifications of Quebec by building Fort St. Louis, near the present Dufferin Terrace; this was not able, how-ever, to prevent a successful attack upon the place by the English under Sir David Kirke in 1629; Quebec was returned to the French in 1632. A stone residence for the govemors of New France was begun in 1647, the Chateau St. Louis, which continued to house govemors, British and French, until 1834. The great C.P.R. hotel, Ch̢teau Frontenac, has been built on its site.
