Map of Russia Tourist on Robert Jay Mathews, the leader of The Order who was earlier killed in a shootout with federal agents on Whidbey Island, Washington in December 1984, was also identified by prosecutors as having participated in the murder. Another convicted member of the white supremacist group, Robert Merki, testified Berg was just one of several influential Jews on The Order’s hitlist which included industrialist Armand Hammer and the recently deceased New York Senator Jacob Javitz. Zillah Craig, the former mistress of The Order’s leader Robert Jay Mathews, testified under a grant of immunity that Berg was marked for death because he ridiculed two white supremacist preachers during a phone interview with them on February 13, 1984. On November 17, 1987, 25 Berg Bruce Pierce and David Lane were convicted of violating Berg’s civil rights and were each sentenced to prison terms of 150 years with parole eligibility after 50 years served. Jean Craig, the stalker, and lookout Richard Scutari were found not guilty. In August 1989, a federal appeals court upheld the civil rights convictions against the two racists rejecting arguments that they participated in Berg’s killing because they hated him, not because he was a Jew. In 1988, monologist-actordirector Eric Bogosian incorporated elements of Alan Berg’s murder into his film, Talk Radio, a tale of an acerbic deejay murdered by a white supremacist.
