Oriental cuisine is getting a designer makeover, says Nell Nelson

There’s a flourishing new restaurant scene centred in Lan Kwai Fong, the city’s most happening after-hours district.

The Plaza complex houses three sleek new Malaysian, Korean and Japanese restaurants – Bamboo, Mr Kim and Kyoto Joe – which serve modern interpretations of their respective cuisines. Bamboo (00 852 2804 6009), boasts an open wood-decked terrace, with cream canopies and a separate bar area. Minimalist Mr Kim (00 852 2804 6883) features Korean barbecues’ where diners can grill their meal to taste. At Kyoto Joe (00 852 2804 6800) you can sample one of 16 sakes before moving to the Robotayaki bar at the back of the restaurant where meat and fish dishes are grilled to order. One floor below, a dramatic sushi bar features a coloured backdrop that changes as often as the menu.
