A worm of excitement danced within me: in my mind, I was headed for the lands that Joseph Conrad himself had wandered, on the same type of ship doing the same job. Conrad had served in the British Merchant Navy on barques and clippers, on sailing ships that mostly ambled around the Far East and South Pacific.
The Benreoch was an old ship when I served on her, although she had been launched sixty years after Conrad had signed off his last ship in 1894. Even so, Conrad would have easily recognised her as a general cargo steamer.
