Burton, Roderick Anthony, II see Dolla Byard, Jaki (V) Acknowledged as one of the most versatile pianists in jazz, Byard (born John Arthur Byard on June 15, 1922, in Worcester, Massachusetts) came from a musical family (his father was a trombonist in marching bands, his mother a church pianist) and he played his first professional engagement at the age of 16. Following a stint in the army during World War II, Byard left the military in 1944 with the ability to play almost any instrument with equal facility. An early bebopper in New York, the musician returned to his home base of Boston in the mid?1940s recording with jazz saxophonist Charlie Marinaro and later touring with R&B great Earl Bostic. In the early 1950s, Byard distinguished himself as the leading musical teacher in Boston laying the groundwork for that city’s preeminence in the field of jazz education. Delhi Subway Map 2016.
