Cleveland Map Tourist Attractions on The sons of a Dallas, Texas, recording studio owner, the Abbott brothers were early exposed to the country music of clients Buck Owens and Freddy Fender. Both learned to play by picking up instruments lying around the studio with Darrell playing drums into his early teens before handing the kit off to Vinnie to focus on guitar. Huge fan of bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Kiss, and Van Halen, the brothers formed Pantera in the early 1980s, but initially sounded like a variety of other so-called hair metal groups. By 1983 with the release of their first album Metal Magic, Pantera was becoming increasingly well-known through touring in support of headlining metal bands like Dokken, Quiet Riot, and Stryper. Three other albums on the independent Metal Magic label appeared (Projects in the Jungle, 1984; I Am the Night, 1985; Power Metal, 1988) before the group reinvented and reinvigorated itself with a new line-up and a distinctive sound. In 1988, singer Phil Anselmo replaced Glaze (Lee) and the band’s glam-rock image changed to a harder, more heavily tattooed look with the music evolving into its trademark thrash metal sound. Diamond Darrell became Dimebag (a reference to the price of a bag of dope) while his brother Vincent became known as Vinnie Paul. Cleveland Map Tourist Attractions 2016.
