ARSACIUS d. 405. Patriarch of Constantinople, brother of Nectarius. After the deposition of John Chrysostom he was imposed by the empress Eudoxia as his successor, though already eighty years old consecrated 27 June 404; according to Palladius he was bishop for 14 months. A creature of the imperial party and of weak character, he did not oppose the bloody persecution of Chrysostom’s followers, who had refused him obedience Soz., HE VIII, 23. Not even the imperial edict of 18 Nov. 404 CTh XVI, 4,6, confirming his authority and threatening opposing bishops with exile, strengthened his position; the pope and the West never recognized him.
