Arezzo would like to forget that it was long the younger sibling that Florence loved to smack around during the Guelf and Ghibelline wars, and if Arezzo had won, foreign students might now be flocking there for its architecture instead. It is still an impressive city of art, with some of the finest works by Piero della Francesca. It is also the nation’s best antiques market, and has enjoyed more recent fame as the backdrop for Roberto Benigni’s film Life Is Beautiful. Between Arezzo and Cortona are hills full of magical country homes. Lose yourself in relaxing olive groves and wonder why you didn’t move here earlier.
